What is a clinical trial?

There are many kinds of clinical trials, but generally speaking, a clinical trial is a research study with human beings where some type of health issue is studied.

Why are clinical trials important?

The information that is collected during a clinical trial can ultimately lead to the development of new medications or interventions that are more effective than those that have previously been tried.

Why should I participate in a clinical trial?

By participating in a clinical trial, you are helping researchers develop new interventions that may offer better care or treatment than what you would usually receive. People participate in clinical trials for different reasons, including access to new treatments before they are widely available by healthcare providers. Whatever your reasons, be sure that you make a voluntary and informed decision about your participation and that all of your questions regarding the study are answered before you decide to participate.

You will find more information about clinical trials in general at http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/info/understand.

How will I benefit from being a part of the TARGIT study?

If you are enrolled and randomized to a TARGIT group, you will receive FREE nicotine patches and professional support that may help you quit smoking for good. You may also learn some different ways to avoid gaining weight once you quit smoking (you might even lose weight!).
